What roadside assistance means
Roadside assistance is help at or near the vehicle rather than transport to another address. What can be done depends on the fault, equipment, vehicle and whether it is safe to work at that location. Explain the symptoms you can see; you do not need to name the cause.
Common reasons drivers call
Drivers may call about a flat battery, a car that will not start or a minor problem that has stopped a journey. Give the make and model, any warning message and what changed. For battery concerns, mention whether the car is a hybrid or electric so vehicle-specific procedures can be considered.
Roadside assistance or breakdown recovery?
Roadside assistance keeps the work at or near the car if that is safe and suitable. Breakdown recovery transports a vehicle that cannot or should not continue. A roadside visit cannot promise a repair. If the location is exposed to traffic, the car is damaged or the problem needs more work, discuss recovery instead.
What happens when you call
We will ask where the car is, what it can do and what you have noticed. Tell us if it is blocking a road, in a restricted car park or difficult to reach. We can explain the option being discussed and its cost before anything is arranged. If roadside help is not appropriate, we can talk through the next step and destination.
A flat battery can look like other starting faults. Compare the options on our car battery assistance page.
