Prioritise safety and official instructions
If you can safely reach a designated refuge or other safe place, follow the vehicle and road-authority guidance. Use hazard lights when appropriate. Do not attempt repairs or stand beside live traffic. If anyone is injured or in immediate danger, call 112 or 999.
Describe your location precisely
When safe, note your direction of travel, nearest junction, carriageway and any marker or landmark visible from a safe position. Share whether you are in a refuge, on a slip road or elsewhere, and follow instructions from motorway control or emergency services.
Explain the vehicle and recovery need
Give the make and model, what happened, whether it can roll or steer and any damage or access issue. Tell the provider if the vehicle is electric or hybrid. Agree the proposed service and destination directly; do not leave a safe area to meet a recovery vehicle unless instructed by authorities.
